Something I See Infront of Me Right Now

This was exercise 20 that we had on the lockdown day. I went home and looked around my house and this was what I saw. It's an observation I made. What did you think? How did it make you feel? Have at it. Enjoy.

A canvas
Upon an easel it rests
Against sturdy oak
It lies comfortable, at it's best

Bare
With no stray marks
On smooth white skin
An exodus the artist embarks

We marvel, gaze, and wonder
We absorb, devour, and consume
The story it has to convey
Like watching a flower bloom

  1. This is beautiful Alyssa!! I can see the canvas so easily in my mind and the imagery is perfect. I imagine someone sitting in front of it, contemplating what they picture they would choose from their imagination to make it reality... It gives off a magnetic pull, making me want to touch the canvas, to feel the weave of the fabric before the paint goes on it. It makes me imagine the medium of the artist's preference, seeming immortal in the painter's tray. And the blooming flower reference makes the entire thing seem so innocent and pure, like the way a flower blooms, like "Oh, hey, I'm a flower. And right now, I'm going to open up and just show my beauty to the world, because I'm a flower." It is a beautiful comparison to the wonder of the artist's imagination before they bestow that first stroke on the canvas. It's almost like an infant before they meet the world. I love it. It's glorious.

  3. I thought this poem was great! I could really see everything you described. I love how the canvas kind of becomes a person, with it's smooth white skin. It made me feel like the canvas was actually a person, and it was like an innocent child or something. There are no marks yet, it's just a baby, with no experiences and it's whole life ahead of it. The last line, about the flower, really shows the development of the painting. It shows that it doesn't stay blank forever, it grows and develops and people can see the story it's telling. I also love the word choices, especially at the end. The words were perfectly descriptive and they made it easier to visualize the painting, and the people seeing it. Wonderful, amazing poem.
