I'm pretty sure I understand what point(s) you're trying to portray, but in my opinion, this is written in a vague way. One way you might be able to clearify the topic, could be by adding a few short lines about what the "hopeful signs" actually were, and if I were you, when doing this, I'd try to paint profound images, but still saying only the minimum amount possible.
