Bodies from Ashes

This was a poem that I wrote for a Latin project but edited in class :) Feel free to tell me what you think. Posted with the knowledge that the Poetry unit starts soon :D Oh, and I'll apologize ahead for the informational overload.

Slain by fire
Frozen in time
Bodies from ashes
Brought back to light

Sediment piles
Suffocating life
Removal of breath
A terrible sight

August 24th
A. D. 79
Bodies from ashes
A preservation of time

Brought up from the rubble
In ruins, it lay
Pompeii in its splendor
A glimpse of a day

Vesuvius, volcanic
Ashes and rock,
Spewed up in the sky
Brought down in a shock

The earth, it shook
Causing great tremors
An eruption that lasted
Many long hours

Ash fell like the rain
Hot, gray, and dry
Burning through throats
Of those who will die

Pyroclastic waves
Of poisonous gas
Cover the city
And kill off the last

The screams, the cries
Of burning pain
The tragedy struck
The city lay tamed

Bodies from ashes
Preserved in the dust
Kept safe from decay,
Erosion and rust

Scientific discoveries
The first of their kind
Bodies from ashes
A picture of time

Now emotions lay frozen
In the faces, inlayed
To show the terror
Of a day in Pompeii
