Foorprints on the Sand

A ship is speeding across the ocean. The water is greenish blue with white caps. The sky is darkening for sunset. The boat is returning home slowly getting closer to the green shore with the trees starting to change color. Women are running out of the woods waving towards the ship. They are smiling and holding eachother.

As the ship gets closer their faces change. They're getting older. The sky keeps switching from night to dark. Children of different ages show up and dissapear as soon as they reach early twenties looking. Finally there is one woman alone. She is aging quickly. The boat finally reaches the shore. It looks tiny, worn, and old. They slowly walk into the woods leaving footprints in the sand. As they walk; fall, winter, spring, and summer views of the beach show up.

The sunrises and sets over and over again. Children are playing down by the beach. The children leave and the sunsets. The sunrises yet again, the seasons past and now there is a young girl and boy holding hands walking down the beach in the same way the old couple did. They leave footprints in the sand.

What do you think of this?

  1. It's slightly confusing. Throughout the entire piece there was no mention as to who was on the ship. Personally I'm assuming it was men, or a man, but I can't be for certain. It also seems very cluttered, as if there was no plan to this before it was written.

  2. There wasn't a plan, it was the writing exercise with the music playing in the background. Thanks though!
